Creating a Platform for I-Corps Researchers

  • I broke down the process for I-corp researchers and help identify pain points for us to design for.

  • I helped sketch and develop the low-fidelity and mid-fidelity prototypes

Problem Space

The growing need and nature of quality user research bring challenges to a certain group of researchers who conduct a multitude of interviews for the I-Corps foundation. I-Corps, short for Innovation Corps, is an NSF-funded national program that aims to help researchers turn their ideas into viable products for the market through insights into entrepreneurship, resources while starting a business, and knowledge of industry requirements and challenges.

As part of the programs, researchers are required to conduct customer discovery interviews, which help them understand the viability of their product in the relevant markets. These researchers have the responsibility of conducting and analyzing anywhere from 30-100 interviews in a short amount of time, experiencing efficiency issues from collecting and analyzing interview data in large amounts.

Target Users: Researchers who are looking to learn more about relevant markets through understanding who their customer is, in addition to exploring the commercialization of their research.

Project Duration: 4 months

This project was completed as coursework in my Purdue UX Design Studio.

Final Product

Market Segment Page

  • The users can now see that they have comments from their professor.

  • Users can look at what hypotheses are connected to the interviews they have completed. They then can remove or add new hypotheses.

Market Segment Analysis Page

  • Users will have multiple market segments, and this page enables them to view all their segments when determining the appropriate category for placing their interviews.

  • The colors represent distinct interviews within the market segment and indicate whether they support or contradict the associated hypothesis.

Interview Protocol Page

  • Connecting hypotheses to the interview is simplified as it presents all your hypotheses in a single location, enabling easy navigation and search functionality.

  • A dedicated tab enables users to review feedback from their professor, facilitating the incorporation of suggested changes into their interview protocol.

Interview Notes Page

  • Users have the option to upload documents in the text, saving time by avoiding the need to manually type out entire interviews that may have been previously documented elsewhere.

  • When recording notes within the application, you can conveniently access both your protocol and note-taking space in a unified location, eliminating the need to have two separate documents open.

Who is HiDelta?

HiDelta is partnered with I-Corps (a company that works alongside the National Science Foundation) to create software to ease the experience of conducting customer discovery interviews for I-Corps researchers.

I-Corps works with the National Science Foundation (NSF) to help researchers turn their research into a feasible product in the market through user research interviews.

Final Deliverables

Medium fidelity wireframes, that showcase a set of design suggestions that improve upon the local I-Corps researcher process when conducting customer discovery interviews

Processes and Contributions

Breaking Down the Process

Researcher Process Map

Before the team and I started designing we took the time to walk through the process and make note of any red flags and areas of improvement we noticed.

Mapping Out the Researcher's Experience

My team and I started to work on creating a mock-up of what the process for participants at one of the levels within the program would look like directly from the interview insights, piecing them together to discuss where the pain points we discovered from the interviews fit into an overall flow.

User Journey

Sketches and Paper Prototyping

Once we completed our research, interviews, and analysis of the current application that is being used, we did some sketches to explore design opportunities to alleviate the pain points we discovered. After our team started brainstorming we realized through another interview that there were also pain points from the mentors helping the researchers. This meant our team went through another round of brainstorming to alleviate the pain points of both users. My team's work on the new setup application's framework was followed by paper prototyping. To assist in envisioning and coming up To advance to the following iteration, our team conducted an internal assessment of these prototypes.

After my team started laying out the framework of the new set-up application we moved into paper prototyping. We used paper prototyping to help visualize and ideate the mobile interface. Our team did an in-house evaluation of these prototypes to help move us to the next iteration.

Market Segment Analysis

Users will utilize this page for the creation and monitoring of market segments related to their research on products, and it serves as the platform for selecting the specific market segments where completed interviews should be categorized.

Interview Protocol

This is the page where users can create interview protocols, drawing insights from their hypotheses to shape questions and incorporating feedback from their professors.

Market Segment Page

This page allows users to view various interviews and hypotheses contributing to the market statement, providing the option to explore the linked hypotheses generated from interviews, as well as access comments left by their professor.

Interview Notes - Attachments

Users can link their video recordings, audio recordings, and images from their interviews, consolidating all their interview information into a single location.

Interview Notes

On this page, users can look at their interview protocol and take notes on their interview on the same page. They have the ability to attach a document if they took notes in a document rather than on the platform.

Interview Notes - Next Steps

This page enables users to input interview insights and outline their next steps, providing the option to associate specific hypotheses with the interview. Users can also seek feedback from their professor on both the interview and their insights.
